Fed: Greenhouse gas may be stored underground

CANBERRA, Dec 5 AAP - A new research project will investigate whether greenhouse gases
can be stored underground.

The project is a collaboration between the Australian Greenhouse Office and six oil
and gas companies - Shell, West Australian Petroleum, Woodside Energy, Chevron, BP Amoco
and BHP Petroleum.

It will test the viability of depositing carbon dioxide - generated by natural gas
production - deep under the earth's surface.

"The GEODISC study will explore the environmental, social and economic potential to
remove carbon dioxide from natural gas production and put it back into depleted oil and
gas reservoirs," federal Environment Minister Robert Hill said in a statement.

The federal government will contribute $200,000 over the next two years, with the possibility
of more funding when it can be demonstrated the technology would provide practical benefits.
