Vic: Political future of former Lib leader unclear

MELBOURNE, Aug 22 AAP - Three days after being dumped as leader of the Victorian LiberalParty, a cloud still hangs over the political future of Denis Napthine.

New leader Robert Doyle today said he had spoken to Dr Napthine today about his futurein the party - but refused to reveal what was said.

Mr Doyle has offered Dr Napthine a position on the front bench, but speculation isrife the former leader will quit politics at the next election.

He has so far refused to talk to the media.

"I have spoken to Denis Napthine this morning, I do not wish at the moment to givehis answer," Mr Doyle said.

"I'm not going to pre-empt anything, I have said to Denis I very much want him as seniormember of that shadow cabinet.

"I think he has a great contribution to make and I wish to actually use him in shadow cabinet."

Mr Doyle said he would announce the new line-up for the opposition front bench "inthe next few days", which he said would show the direction he wanted the party to movein.

"It's not just about shadow cabinet," he said.

"I've talked before about giving every member of the party a task, and I want to talkto you about exactly how I see the shape of the Liberal team that will take us to thenext election.

"We will roll out initiatives and policies before the next election so that peopleknow exactly what the Liberals stand for."
