NATO to further reduce Kosovo force in 2010

NATO's new secretary-general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday the alliance is aiming to cut its Kosovo force by more than half to around 5,700 troops if an initial reduction goes well.

The alliance will initially reduce its 15,000-strong peacekeeping force to about 10,000 troops early next year, Fogh Rasmussen told reporters at Kosovo's main airport, in line with previous estimates.

"The next step is to reduce to around 5,700 troops," he said. "But, that very much will depend on the developments in Kosovo and in the region."
